The prop nut, which holds the prop to the shaft, transfers the reverse thrust. Thus, many spacers are splined; and some are additionally cogged or pinned for different Mercury, Mariner, and Mercruiser applications. It is to operate with a surface tab washer and stop the nut from coming undone. The spacer aids the alignment of the prop to the shaft when the inner hub can no longer maintain its form, much like the thrust washer does, but this time at the aft end of the prop.
